ONTARIO TRILLIUM FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANT TO WAUPOOS FOUNDATION
Ottawa , Ontario – The Waupoos Foundation announced today that it has been awarded a grant of $40,600 from The Ontario Trillium Foundation for a major renovation project at the Waupoos Farm at 2050 Rideau Road.
The official presentation of the cheque will take place at the Farm on Saturday, August 11 at 2:30 pm. MPP Phil McNeely will make the presentation and the Ontario Trillium Foundation will be represented by Frank Dyson, a member of the OTF's Champlain district Grant Review Team.
Waupoos Farm offers vacation facilities to low-income families in financial need and with children under 16 years of age. During the summer, families live in cottages for the week, and have access to a swimming pool with a life guard, a lodge for crafts, outdoor nature trails and lots of space for physical outdoor activities with staff supervision. A large garden provides fresh vegetables for the cottagers.
A winter program is available on a more limited basis for a number of weekends and during school breaks. Guests have access to a skating rink, tobogganing, ski trails and the lodge.
The Trillium grant will be used to purchase material to renovate five cottages. These buildings, although still operational and occupied this summer by forty families during July and August, are showing the signs of 25 years of active family living. The renovations will help reduce operating costs with new windows and doors, improved insulation and general retrofitting. Volunteer labour will be provided by several Councils of the Knights of Columbus coordinated by Pat Malloy.
Earlier this summer, one of the cottagers wrote about her vacation at the end her stay: “ We loved all of it: the fresh veggies, great poolside fun, getting to know everyone, my kids interacting with other kids and being safe, the untalented talent show that gave everyone a chance to shine.”
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario. For 25 years , it has supported the growth and vitality of communities across the province. OTF continues to strengthen the capacity of the volunteer sector through investments in community - based initiatives. For more information, please visit www.trilliumfoundation.org .
